Elements of Art and Mask Making History
http://www.sunnyday.org/art_lesson_plans/mask_making_history.htm
Although the origin of the mask is not known, evidence of its presence as covering, disguise, and adornment of the human face has been found in artifacts, literature, and folklore of primitive, as well as, sophisticated societies, thereby revealing the important role it has played in human life.
Check out this web site with cultures around the world making masks for purposes:

Look at various cultures and what they did for making masks. What is YOUR story? How will you reflect this in your mask? What elements of design do you want to include?
Begin by drawing an example. Think about the lines, colors, “add-ons” (like feathers, beads, bone, etc.). Use the PDER process (plan/do/evaluate/refine). Plan out your design first, based on the research you’ve done. Do the sculpting and let your mask dry before painting it, or adding on extras.
Evaluate how well you are communicating your message to others. Refine… reflect on what you did, what you learned, how you would change this next time.
