Middle Ages (Soc Env SE.WH 3.05)

How open-minded am I?  What are some dangers in basing judgments on limited knowledge?  How can we learn from events that happened during the middle ages?  Who is my favorite character from this time period and why?

SE.WH 3.05 "Analyzes the significant ideas, people, and events of the Middle Ages."
PROFICIENT = • Describes events of the middle ages, including: Charlemagne's Empire, Monarchies, and Crusades.  • Describes how events from the middle ages (800 - 1500 A.D.) influenced art, culture, politics and ideas of individuals and society as a whole.

How far would you go to defend your beliefs? In this unit, we will learn about kings, queens, knights, and whole civilizations built on beliefs. In the “Middle Ages” society lived in fear for their personal safety and thinking differently. We will explore the arts, literature, science, and how events can be compared with current happenings in the world today.

Students work in groups, individually, and in whole-class group discussions. Research main points for:
- Charlemagne
- Crusades
- Monarchies
- Church Power
- Affects on culture and art
Work in class includes short videos (3-4 minutes each); class discussions; and exploring the text and other sources.  Students will explore one character from this time period, in depth, and create a project around that character, or find an organization to get involved in that create change for the good of the community.
